    Spring touches

I love the clean feeling of spring. Everything is coming alive, we clean out the yard, we clean our houses. As spring approaches I love putting away the heavy throws, cozy pillows, and all the heavy winter decor. When I decorate and change a room for each season, I choose small things to change and refresh. This year I decided that I would change up some pillows on my family room couch to add a clean new look. I found a tutorial here online on how to make envelope pillows and I got some fabric and went for it. Wow…just that little bit really gave my room a new, clean…

    My daughter’s finished room

A few months ago my twelve year old daughter came to me and asked for a room makeover.  She wanted a “teenager” bedroom. I’m not going to lie, I was a little sad, this is my youngest which means no more “little kid” rooms. That being said, I always love a great room makeover.  So we came up with a plan, and went to work. This is what the room looked like before…very very girly. Like a six year old picked things out right? I guess an update was due.   First thing we did was pick a bedspread, then the wall color. She wanted a gray bedspread and I…

Fall touches – my living room

This year for fall I decided to keep it simple, and the living room is no exception. We usually call this room the music room since a lot of piano playing goes on in there. The room is painted denim, and all the chairs in that room are gray. This more neutral color palate helps the room feel formal without feeling stuffy. For fall this year I literally placed a couple of pumpkins on the secretary and vintage suitcase I have by the piano. I added some sunflowers on the table, and my topiary I usually have in the room just feels like fall already. My fur throw was perfect…

    Fall touches – mantel stairways

When we were renovating our home, we decided against putting a mantle above the fireplace. I just wanted a clean wall. This opened up our room and gave it a lot more space. The only problem was where I was going to decorated my “holiday mantels.” I have two stairways in my home. One going up, and one going down. We created shelves in both areas. This became the perfect place for my holiday decorating. In the downstairs hallway there was a natural shelf created from our foundation. It use to be just dry wall, but we trimmed it out and added some brick. This is an easy place to…

Fall touches – my dining room

My dining room is a fun room to decorate. I love adding touches of the season to that room because that is where we eat every night, and we can enjoy the space. I again went very simple this year. I wanted the room to have the feeling of fall, but not just be a fall room. So here are some fun touches I added this year to my space. I added some fall dishes and pumpkins to the inside of my hutch and added some pumpkins on my small cabinet and dining room table. I love adding pumpkins to the tops of candle sticks to add some height and…

    Fall touches…my family room

I think I’ve mentioned before. I love fall. It is probably my most favorite season of the year. Most years I have gone all out with my fall decorating. I would use garlands, pumpkins, pictures…you  name it.  This year however, I decided to take a much more simple approach. I wanted to have a cozy fall feel to the room without the clutter of too much stuff. It is different than I have done before, but I like it. I did not want to completely tear apart my room to decorate for fall this year. Instead I just added a few fun touches. My blankets and pillows get added for…

    Touches of spring…the dining room

I am so excited for spring. It is like someone switched a light switch around here. It went from snowy and cold to sunny and beautiful in a matter of a week. I am having fun adding some touches of spring to my home. The first room I started with was the dining room. I recently finished a cabinet, and I was excited to accessorize it. I got in the mood to change things around one sunny afternoon, but I didn’t want to go to the store to find things. Shocking, I know. So…I did the next best thing and went shopping in my home. I had a wire basket…

    Danica’s room reveal

Danica and I have been talking about her room for a while now. When we first moved into this home almost six years ago, her room was the first room we did. She was ten at the time, and wanted something girly and pink. She has since grown up, started high school, and her style has changed. Remember what the room looked like before? Very pink, and a little too young for a freshman. We painted it gray, and went with a totally new look. The room is now very calm and serene. We painted her book shelves white, found a new bed and desk, and put an amazing chair…

    Changing it up

Isn’t it funny that in January most of us are craving a little change in our homes. I don’t know if it is because we are spending so much time inside from winter, or just that our spaces look a little plain from Christmas. Whatever it is, I know that for me, I need that little change up in my home in January. Usually it is just moving things I already have around to different spaces, or adding a few new accessories here and there. This year has been great because I found and got a couple of great new items that made my space feel a little more fun.…

    My favorite shades of gray

Christmas was great, the break was even better, and this week the kids have only gone to school for two days. It has been hard getting back into our schedules around here. It has been so cold and snowy. The kids have had two snow days this week because of the temperature.  I guess -20 is too cold to let the kids go to school. So to keep busy, I have decided to paint my daughter’s room. She was ten when we moved into this house, and wanted hot pink and Paris back then. Super cute for a ten year old, but not so much for a fifteen year old…

Christmas home tour – my kitchen and stairway

The next part of my Christmas tour is my kitchen, and well maybe the hallway and banister too. I decided not to put a mantle above my fireplace when we were remodeling the family room. So I had to come up with somewhere else to hang the stockings. I decided to hang them on the window shelf in the nook of my staircase. I love this spot because it is right by the kid’s rooms and the red stockings pop off of the white wainscoting. I also love that decorations on the shelf on my wall that my hubby made me goes so well with Christmas. It feels like a fun…

Christmas home tour – my family room

Welcome! This is the view from my front door. I kept Christmas a little more simple around here this year. I wanted to make my home feel nostalgic, like Christmas’s past. I like to keep a lot of my décor out and add Christmas touches to each spot. Normally I set up one of my villages on this dresser in my entry. This year however, I wanted to keep my typewriter and camera out so I just added a santa and some berries to the mix. I moved my chair and put my tree in the corner next to the couch. I did this last year and I really liked…

Christmas home tour – my music room

I love decorating my home for Christmas. The music room in my home is one of my favorite places  to decorate. I love my villages. We have collected two. The kids and their dad put them up, and the girls love to place the people around. It makes the room feel festive. We have them on the suitcase and floor next to the piano. I went to a house one year and the village was displayed on the piano, but I am not brave enough to put it on our piano. I like how it just spills around it making the space feel like an old town. I put the…

    Fall at my house

Holy cow it has been chilly here this week.  Perfect fall weather to decorate the house!  For fall, or any holiday for that matter, I like add touches to my already existing decor.  My decorating style could be described as simple and comfortable.  I am not into tearing the whole house apart for a season and putting it back together after the season is over. Trust me, I have done this a time or two in my life and it is not fun. Rather, I like to change simple things like pillows and blankets.  Change out a picture, or add a pumpkin to some existing decor.  So here is what…

    Vintage love

The new year has been busy around these parts.  Christmas was great…winter was long!!  Spring is upon us, and I feel like refreshing, cleaning, and organizing all my rooms.  We finished our house in the fall, so I used all my fall décor to decorate the new rooms.  Then I did the same thing at Christmas time.  By the time I took down all my Christmas décor, I realized that I didn’t have anything to fill up my new spaces.  So I of course had to do a little shopping.  I had donated most of my old décor to the DI, so I was starting over.  I knew I wanted…
