    Winter Porch

Here are a couple of quick and easy ideas for some inspiration to add to an outdoor winter porch. The porch is the first thing you see that welcomes you into a home. When Christmas comes down, everything looks a bit blah to me. I wanted my porch to be inviting and fun even though it is cold and snowy. This is why I turned to textures and colors for some inspiration. When I think of colors of winter I think of cream, blue, green and gray. I think of yarn sweaters, pine, and sledding outdoors. I took that inspiration to create my fun and simple winter porch. Th first…

    My daughter’s finished room

A few months ago my twelve year old daughter came to me and asked for a room makeover.  She wanted a “teenager” bedroom. I’m not going to lie, I was a little sad, this is my youngest which means no more “little kid” rooms. That being said, I always love a great room makeover.  So we came up with a plan, and went to work. This is what the room looked like before…very very girly. Like a six year old picked things out right? I guess an update was due.   First thing we did was pick a bedspread, then the wall color. She wanted a gray bedspread and I…

    Winter Pom pom wreath

Happy January! It seems like after the holidays and the house gets cleaned up, I need a little project or something new to help bring in the new season. This year I made a winter yarn pom pom wreath for my front door. I have been having this love affair with yarn wreaths lately. I made this one for fall, and this one for Christmas. I decided to make another one to get my porch through the winter months. I wanted to choose winter colors, and I wanted the yarn to have thick texture, like a warm sweater. I grabbed this thick yarn at the craft store. It was almost…

    Outdoor bench

When I was creating my porch this year I decided that I wanted to make a bench for it. I had been looking online and found the instructions for this bench here . It literally took this much wood to create a great bench, and it cost about $15. My hubby and I (mostly my hubby) followed the instructions and it turned out awesome. I wanted it to stand out from the house, so I grabbed my favorite go to gray paint…man cave… and painted the legs. I decided to stain the top to add some interest. It was a fun and easy project that didn’t cost a fortune. It…

    Sunflower pots

Are you looking for something fun and unusual to pot flowers in? A few years ago, I found these metal garbage cans and decided they would be great to use as planters for my patio. Each year I planted something in them, and just didn’t love how it turned out. Then this year I was shopping and found these sunflowers. They are small, great for pots, and look great in the garbage cans. I love them! It is a pop of happiness on my patio.

A one of a kind shelf

So it a while back I found this great architectural piece of wood at my local antique store. When I say a while back, I mean probably a year or more ago.  Every time I went into this store I wanted to buy this piece and create something with it. A few weeks ago I got my chance. A few weeks back I made a few changes to my family room and bought an old radio. This started kind of a spiral of sorts. I had a chair where the old radio was, so I had to move the chair to the wall where my cool arrow hung. Since I moved the…

    Picking and fixing

Doing my daughters room has been interesting….fun, but interesting. The last time I decorated her room, she was ten and basically told me what colors she wanted. This time, it is a whole different story. Danica wants things the way Danica wants them. Actually she has a great eye for design, so it is actually fun having her pick out her own stuff and it is fun to have another partner in crime.  So a while back we were picking at my favorite antique store and came across this desk. It was in rough shape, but the lines were good, so we got it for Danica’s room. It was love at…

    The story of a frame

A long time ago when I was younger I had a neighbor who was an artist. I loved going over to her house with my mom and visit her. She painted the most beautiful paintings. She always had something fun to show us, and she had great style. I was lucky to get a few of these old frames to use in my home. I had one that I wasn’t using in my storage room, and I thought what the perfect thing to use for a display board for D’s room. It was white, and had great detail, but I wanted to change it up a bit and paint the frame dark…

    Winter Schminter

Holy winter batman. We are snowed in where I live. We got 20 inches of snow on Tuesday, and I am tired of it! I have been using my stuck in the house time wisely though. I have been working on my daughter’s desk, re finishing it. I have never kept the finish on  a piece of furniture wood, so I am learning some fun new techniques. The veneer on the top was coming up, so we glued and sanded it. It is turning out lovely! I have the top stained, and the whole piece sealed. I can’t wait to bring it up to her room! I got some frames out from under…

    re purposing a bed

I have been busy working on my daughter’s room. I have the room painted, her desk prepped, and I found a great bed for her. When I am working on a room I always look for used items that I can re purpose. Either things I already have, or things at antique stores. I went shopping the other day and found this great head board and foot board. I loved the lines on them, and I knew it would be perfect for my daughter’s room. Here’s the thing…it was only 39 bucks. I couldn’t pass it up. It was well built, and I knew I could put a little effort into…

    Christmas on my porch

I have spent all of last week decorating and getting ready for Christmas. One of my favorite spaces to decorate is my front porch. I kept it pretty simple this year. I took the lantern from my front porch and sprayed it a new color. That was when the grass was still green. I took that lantern and put it on my porch and added a bit of greenery and lights to it. Then I took this fun find and made it into a chalk board to hang a wreath on. We just cut some wood, and I sprayed it with chalk board paint. Then we stapled it onto the…

How to make something from nothing

I finished my console and I am so excited to share the entire process. I love looking up paint tutorials and learning different ways to paint furniture. Even though I learn about different techniques and ways to paint, I consistently go back to the way I have been painting furniture and cabinets for years. This way works for me, I love the finish, and it holds up well. So here is the cabinet that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It was dated, and dirty! I got it for a killer price and originally brought it home to paint and sell it. I put it in the garage to prep…

    A bit of spray paint

I can’t believe it is November already. Time is flying. I love the fall, and decorating for it is so much fun. That being said, I also love Christmas, and decorating for that is a lot more fun. So every November 1st I start thinking about how I want to decorate. Little touches I want to change from previous years, or crafts I want to do.  This week I have been thinking about my porch. I have had this fun lantern for years now and it has recently been out in my back yard. I painted it yellow so that it would stand out in the yard. I cleaned all…

A mood board for my daughter’s room

I have been “working”….ummm thinking about my daughter’s room for the past little while now.  We have purchased a desk already that I am going to re finish, so now it’s time to work on picking out some more of the details.  When I start a room I like to do a mood board. A mood board is just a place to put all of your ideas and design inspiration for the room. I look online and decide on all the things we want to buy or put in the room.  I then open excel and just copy and paste all my ideas about the room so it is organized in one spot.…

    Hallways

Starting my hallway project took a lot of time and thinking. The whole thing started with this fun hook rack I found at an antique store. I made a wreath for it, and hung it at the end of our hallway. I knew that I wanted something more hanging on the walls, and I decided that it would most likely be pictures. You know all those pictures you have taken over the years, those pictures you want to display but don’t know how? Well here is my clean and simplified version of a gallery wall. I have a very long hallway in my upstairs that I needed to decorate. I have seen some…
