    Winter Pom pom wreath

Happy January! It seems like after the holidays and the house gets cleaned up, I need a little project or something new to help bring in the new season. This year I made a winter yarn pom pom wreath for my front door. I have been having this love affair with yarn wreaths lately. I made this one for fall, and this one for Christmas. I decided to make another one to get my porch through the winter months. I wanted to choose winter colors, and I wanted the yarn to have thick texture, like a warm sweater. I grabbed this thick yarn at the craft store. It was almost…

    The story of a frame

A long time ago when I was younger I had a neighbor who was an artist. I loved going over to her house with my mom and visit her. She painted the most beautiful paintings. She always had something fun to show us, and she had great style. I was lucky to get a few of these old frames to use in my home. I had one that I wasn’t using in my storage room, and I thought what the perfect thing to use for a display board for D’s room. It was white, and had great detail, but I wanted to change it up a bit and paint the frame dark…

    Grain sacks

I love love love antique stores.  I have found one that I especially love here where I live.  This is pretty random, since where I live doesn’t exactly have the greatest home decor stores or selections.  So I was shopping around this summer and found some old grain sacks that were like five bucks each.  I couldn’t resist picking a couple of them up.  I spent the summer while the kids were home from school thinking about what I wanted to do with them, and I came up with a couple of things. The first and obvious thing I could think of was to make a pillow out of one.…

Fun, easy, and totally no sew (or barely sew) window treatments

I love dressing up my windows. It just adds that finishing touch that every room needs. However, I am not a fan of large nineties window treatments. There is too much fabric which creates dust, and quite frankly, reminds me of shoulder pads. When I was thinking about the windows in my rooms, I wanted to add just the right touch without taking away from the window trim we added.  I came up with a fun solution one day while shopping at Target.  They had napkins on clearance that were just the right color for the room I was doing.  Napkins were the perfect solution that I needed to add some…

    Mixing it up with pattern

Mixing patterns can be tricky.  When I talk to my friends about decorating their homes, how I mix up the patterns in my room is always the question that gets asked.  I love pattern.  I think I have decorating ADD because I get tired of rooms and decor pretty quickly.  One way I have found that works for me to stay happy with a room longer, is to use patterns. My first rule is to keep the bigger pieces solid.  This allows you to have fun with the rugs, blankets, pillows, chairs, and art.  Next decide on a color pallette. In my room the main colors are gray and white.…

Some words, a vignette, and a runner

I have been showing some finishing touches I have done to my craft room lately. As I came down the bottom of the stairs it was plain and lacking some personality.  I had hung pictures in other parts of the room and basement, and I didn’t want the space to feel like a gallery.  I decided to get on my silhouette, and with my hubby’s help, I found my favorite quote and cut it out with vinyl. Most of the words except the word create were cut out in Navy blue and I decided to do the word create in a gray color with a different font. I love this…

    Finished Craft Room

It was a lot of work, but we finished. We took a basement that had an awkward layout  Tore out the wall of one bedroom and created a fun and way functional new family craft room. We installed laminate hand scraped acacia flooring. I decided to go with laminate in the basement instead of wood just for the practicality. I wanted a space we could glue in, paint in, and just have fun in without worrying about carpet.  We put a butter color on the walls, and painted the cabinets white. I found the knobs at hobby lobby and decided I needed a pop of color. I sprayed the knobs…

Adding personality with fabric and color

I’ve been working on my girl’s rooms lately. Our next big project. Deciding on colors for the room really had to start with fabric for me.  I was in the craft store and saw a quilt that had the perfect colors for my youngest girl’s room. I quickly bought some fabric and started to make a quilt. It all came together from there. These were the colors I wanted in her room.  I decided to paint the walls the red color, and the ceiling the pink color and add a lot of turquoise and green accents.  I even made doll quilts to match everything. I love fabric and how it…
